FAQs
What can I expect in my first consultation?
In your first consultation your practitioner will take down a detailed medical history and perform relevant examinations to form a Chinese Medicine diagnosis. Examinations may include a Chinese Medicine tongue, pulse and abdominal palpation, other examinations may also be performed if deemed necessary. After a diagnosis is made your practitioner will select the treatment therapies which may include a combination of acupuncture, massage, cupping, moxibustion, herbal medicine and dietary therapies. Your consent will be obtained before any therapies are performed. All these therapies are included in your consultation fee. A treatment plan will also be discussed with you outlining the number of treatments and the frequency of treatments recommended. The length of the first consultation and treatment is usually 60min, subsequent consultations may take 30-45min depending on the therapies being performed.
Does acupuncture hurt? Is it safe?
For those new to acupuncture having acupuncture may be scary. However most people will find that acupuncture is not as painful as imagined. Some people might feel a slight prick when the needles go in, others don’t feel anything at all. Many people report a very relaxed feeling as the treatment progresses and after the treatment.
Acupuncture is very safe in the hands of a qualified acupuncturist, however as with all therapies there are some minor risks involved including pain and bruising at the cite of the needling, light headedness or dizziness during the treatment or post treatment. If you feel any discomfort please let your practitioner know so the treatment can be adjusted for your comfort.
How many treatments will I require?
The number of treatments depends on the severity and duration of your complaint. For minor acute cases, one to three treatments may be enough. Chronic or degenerative conditions may require more treatments to see significant progress. Very often we combine dietary changes, massage, and/or herbal medicine to increase the efficacy of the acupuncture and deal with the root cause of the disorder. Your practitioner will discuss your customised treatment plan with you in your consultation.
How long does it take for the herbs to work?
Acute conditions may resolve within days or weeks. For chronic cases, patients may notice results within one to two months . Follow up formulas may be prescribed to consolidate the results after the main problem has been resolved. For issues like insomnia and anxiety you may be given formulas to take on an as required basis.
